VFA-41 "Black Aces", NAS Lemoore, California. Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet taxis back to the ramp at NLC after another sortie from home station. This unit, known as VF-41 and flying F-14A Tomcats at the time, shot down two Libyan Sukhoi Su-22 'Fitter' fighters over the Gulf of Sidra on 19 August 1981.

I like the way these vivid markings match this minimalistic landscape:) Looks like a return from an LGB-dropping training sortie, with MERs, ATFLIR, and "the guy in back" wearing JHMCS.

The history goes in circles sometimes: In 1980s Navy F-14s shot Libyan Su-22s. Now this F-14 unit flies F/A-18F. And twelve years ago in my country F/A-18C/D was the most favourable future option (if not the price, thus cheaper F-16C/D winning the contract) for Polish... Su-22 pilots.
