First of three Skyrockets built, NACA143 made her first flight on 04. Feb1948 powered only with a J-34-40 turbojet engine. Later this was replaced by a rocket engine, which made necessary that she was air-launched by a B-29. The Skyrocket Program was aimed at investigating the characteristics of swept-wing aircraft at transonic and supersonic speeds. On 20. Nov1953, the 2nd Skyrocket (tail number 37974 / NACA144) reached Mach 2 (2076 km/h), the first time an aircraft went beyond twice the speed of sound.
