Grumman Hawkeyes replaced E-3As for a while during the winter of 1980-1981. Here is an E-2C, but both Bs and C were stationed here.

Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 124 (of which this aircraft is a part) made the first operational deployment of the E-2 to Iceland during this time period. The E-3 squadron normally based here redeployed to West Germany, in light of increased tension in Poland due to the rise of the Solidarity labor movement.
VAW-124, as a part of CVW (Carrier Air Wing) 8, had just completed a North Atlantic / NATO cruise aboard USS Nimitz (September - October 1980). Plenty of nasty, stormy weather in the Norwegian Sea, North of the Arctic Circle! With the deployment to Iceland, the "Bear Aces" of VAW-124 certainly saw more than their fair share of the cold!
