Aviation Photo #1277768 Lockheed EC-130Q Hercules (L-382) - USA - Navy

The EC-130Q was used to communicate with US Navy submarines while they remained submerged. To achieve this a 30,000ft antenna was spooled out behind the aircraft to transfer data with very low frequency (VLF) signals that could penetrate sea water. This example from VQ-4 is seen on approach to runway 11 at RAF Mildenhall; note the red cones used to draw out and stabilise the antennae.
