The "Squadron Marking" is NOT the official VS-24 insignia! LOL Lovingly referred to as the "Duty Cat," the marking actually dates back to the 1970's! At that time, the official squadron marking was that of an eagle holding a busted submarine in its claws. In those days, the navy deployed two VS outfits aboard smaller carriers, like the USS Intrepid (on which VS-24 served during the ship's last deployment), as part of a "Hunter/Killer" group. The ship was designated as a "CVS" while the bigger carriers of the Forrestal class were CVA's. VS-24's "Sister Squadron" was VS-31. Their official emblem was that of a black cat with white on its nose taking a swipe at a swimming mouse whose tail resembled a periscope. Rivalry between sister squadrons was intense! One bright Monday morning a chalk drawing turned up on the duty office/ready room board. Nobody owned up to drawing it. The CO and XO liked it, as did the Maintenance Officer. By the end of the day, the "Duty Cat" (as it was later known) was being added to all of VS-24's S-2's. After the transitioning to the Viking, the Duty Cat became a source of great contention between those assigned to VS-24 and the commander of the Atlantic fleet, causing it to alternately vanish then reappear. As someone who served with VS-24 during their last deployment with the old S-2G Trackers, seeing our beloved cat on a Viking was a very pleasant surprise! Thank you, from the bottom of this old veteran's heart, for submitting this wonderful reminder of a time of my life which is still remembered fondly! Incidently, I was also present years later, for "Teddy's" christening.
