The aircraft displayed is the second and last prototype completing a total of 288 flights to test fighter thrust vectoring technology. Serial number 164584 completed 291 flights and crashed on its 292nd 19th of January 1995 near Edwards AFB due to iced pitot tubes sending incorrect data. X-31 technology basics are today found in EF-2000 Typhoon and F-22 Raptor.

I had the rare opportunity of visiting the facility of Rockwell Space Systems Division in Downey, CA that housed the dome flight simulator of the X-31. I would never forget the high security imposed on visitors of the facility especially the area for the X-31. Armed guards inspected our school bags and jackets. This was back in 1990 before the terrorist attacks of 2001. They probably would not let students visit the facility today.

It is a VTOL aircraft! The pods on the wingtip contain the lift engines - four on each side - the registration is D-9531. For more you can search youtube for Dornier Do-31.
