Why did they land if they had landing gear problems why coudnt they land in ACY it's a lower airline traffic airport as I live in Nj I know ewr it's my home town airport we aready have enough bad publicty from that security scare

As a major airport, EWR can handle better the emergencies than smaller airports. That´s why

This was discussed in one of the forums. Safety is the #1 concern in a situation like this. Effect on delays is no consideration. EWR has longer runways and more emergency support capability so it was the clear choice for the emergency landing.

They probably have more maintenance options in EWR. Add to that longer runway(?) and better emergency equipment.

I guess they landed at EWR because, logistically, it was the easiest to land at. The pax were already bound for EWR so why divert, it would just displace crew pax and luggage. It's probably a lot easier to get the problems rectified at the busier airport, with larger maintenance facilities. Remember, this aircraft has to get back out of EWR again!

United has a maintenance hanger near the north end of the airport. The plane remained on Runway 4L for over 12 hours while airport management attempted to create a rigging system to hoist it up, pull the gear down, and tug it to the appropriate hangar. EWR has long runways, but JFK's are even longer by a few thousand feet in terms of usable landing distance.

While everything everyone who has posted so far has been right, I'll just throw in that ACY not only has shorter runways but is also prone to crosswinds... probably something you'd like to avoid during a gear up landing.
