A visitor from - posted Thu December 15, 2011: Landing on the 1's happens, but rarely, maybe 3x a year for an hour or two each time. The issue isn't the runway length, but rather the terrain on final. The approach is flown to the 28s then at the bridge circles south to line up for the 1's, usually 1R. (very similar to Kai Tak). The 777 is a big aircraft to fly this as many heavies will opt to still land 28 even with a very stiff crosswind. The 777 appears a bit high, but with some way to go so no danger with the departing bus. Probably did a wide turn (being a larger aircraft), so had to stay higher to avoid the hills (from where the photo was taken). With such a stiff headwind to warrant landing on the 1's though, runway length is not a problem.

A visitor from United States posted Mon October 17, 2011: The Zoom in this camera makes the runway look short but in fact the shortest Rwy at sfl is 7,500 ft. and the longest is 11,870, for comparison LGA (La Guardia NY) longest runway is 7,003 ft. Nice picture !! I bet if there was another plane behind the one that took the picture from you could see all 3 planes aligned. Daniel Zubia

But what comes up in my mind is that they might have a little problem if the T7 on the runway has to abort its take-off. The incoming one will be considerably close(r) to the runway.

A visitor from United States posted Fri February 27, 2009: The triple 7 on final still has a ways to go and the departing aircraft is already past taxiway G. By the time the 777 crosses the threshold, the departing aircraft will be well beyond 6000' and airborne (the minimum required).
