A UPS 747 thunders off of 28L at PDX at sunset just as the clouds open up. This flight was diverted to PDX for a fuel stop because of volcanic activity in the Pacific.

The clouds and the rain and the background of trees and hills is like a watercolour painting - and then you get the stark runway below, from which one giant bird throws itself into the air while another comes in out of the gloom. The foreshortening effect makes them all look so close together! Love it.

Beautiful photo!
The lighting makes this a very dramatic shot. BTW The numbers on the right are showing thousands of feet to the end of the runway.

I am in awe of the perspective of this picture. Look at how close the 1000' markers appear to each other, it's hard to believe this is a 10,000' runway from looking at the pic. It makes the weather look that much more threatening.
