OK-MDE (cn 86601202) This aircraft crash-landed at Nicosia's airport, runway 14 while operating flight CSA 531 from Damascus on 29 August 1973. It overran the runway and veered to the right, 150 m short of the runway end. Thank God no fatalities were reported among the 70 passengers and crew. Since then, the wreckage is situated at the actual place of the accident, 150 m from the edge of the runway. The flag of the former Czechoslovakia is still visible on the fin!

After this aircraft had it's accident it was bought by a Cypriot businessman , he then had the wings remoived and the fusilage moved to an area just outside the airport grounds . It was to be a "cafe" with aircraft sounds through the speakers, with airline stewardes type waiters . It was rocket attacked during the 1974 war It is now inside the United Nations Buffer zone

Difficult place to take a photo

How did you get this picture? Did you manage to get access to the airport?

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Sun September 16, 2007:
Excellent photo - but the report that quotes overrunning runway 14 must be wrong as the wreckage lies to the north of the airfield. Must have been reciprocal runway 32.

A visitor from Cyprus posted Fri August 3, 2007:
Nicosia's airport is abounded thats why the wreckage is still there. keep in mind that 38% of Cyprus is under Turkish occupation since 1974 when they invated the Island
