The a340 200/300 doesn't have a cone on the back of their engines whereas the 500/600 do.

Yes they are big engines, the A340-500 looks like a properly proportioned aircraft compared with te A340-300 (which has "hairdryers"), note:
a) All 4 engines on this aircraft are all the same size! (some people think that 2 are bigger than the other -- not true!)
b) These R-R Trent engines are not the same as the CFM engines on the A340-300 - they are much bigger!

The "hair dryers" are the CFMs on the A340-300. These are actually RR Trent 552s, and yes, they are massive!
