Nice capture of a flight test bird. The orange fin cap and trailing cone are for flight test only - no customer ever "asks for it". It is used to capture air data. The RAT is not deployed "just in case", but simply as part of the test procedure on that flight.

A visitor from - posted Wed June 27, 2012:
The orange thing behind her is a trailing cone for aerodynamic characterisation of the A/C. Almost all of the A/C head version do this test, and some airlines ask it for each A/C ...

Can anyone tell me what the thing trailing off the tail is? I notice that on alot of "New" aircraft.

A visitor from United States posted Tue May 15, 2012:
I think in all test flights for new aircrafts "or when a modification is added", landing gears, the turbine are all deployed plus a low altitude flight. Just in case any emergency occurs.

Interesting A320 with sharklets, winglets or whatever. T.B.

A visitor from - posted Tue May 15, 2012:
You like po'tay'to, I like po'tah'to. You like to'may'to, I like to'mah'to. You say sharklets, I say winglets. Let's call the whole thing off.

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue May 15, 2012:
Why is the RAT deployed?

A visitor from - posted Tue May 15, 2012:
Those are winglets not sharklets. And what's the orange thing she's dragging?

A visitor from United Kingdom posted Tue May 15, 2012:
In the thumbnail i thought it was tupolev

A visitor from - posted Tue May 15, 2012:
I have a feeling this one is destined for Air New Zealand.

A visitor from - posted Mon May 14, 2012:
I did notice the RAT in action even before I noticed the sharklets:D

A visitor from - posted Mon May 14, 2012:
Very cool pic, although the term "sharklet" makes me cringe every time I see it - such a stupid name for what is essentially just a winglet.

A visitor from China posted Mon May 14, 2012:
What's that red thing hanging from the tail?

A visitor from - posted Mon May 14, 2012:
Anyone notice the Ram Air Turbine deployed?
