The "hump" is the SATCOM antenna. That plane is now grey.. saw it today at MIA.

Only the rudder is painted because it needs to be balanced.

A visitor from - posted Sun December 30, 2012:
Is the tail unpainted? I thought they were always painted before fitting?

A visitor from - posted Sun December 30, 2012:
Somebody said it shows off the different primer colors. Those actually are not primer paints, they are simply a spray-on layer of plastic or whatever surface protection which will be removed with solvent before the actual primer is applied. They remove the green protection layer, inspect the surface for scratches, buff out any defects, then prime and paint. I saw the Boeing video on the process. They are fanatics when it comes to surface protection before the aircraft gets to the customer. As they put it in the training film, we are selling the customer a new aircraft, not a repaired one.

The hump is a radome for a wifi antenna as others have said. Its actually quite a complex installation that has a heavy framework holding a moving antenna and drive motor system so it can track the satellite. In this day and age it is surprising that they don't have some sort of fixed flat plate antenna with an entirely lighter assembly. It's a complex installation with extensive modification to the frames and skin. I wonder how long this will last until someone comes up with a stationary antenna? Remember old satelite TV antennas? They rode around for years as dead weight until finally removed. Looked very similar.

I believe the "hump" is part of the sat, and Internet comms...hope this helps.

Nice wide-angle shot- really shows off the different primer colors. I believe the hump is a radome, probably used for WiFi.

There is something about this photo which is just to cool. The fact is the 777 is so awesome that it looks better than most commercial aircraft even un-painted.

A visitor from United States posted Sun December 30, 2012:
That'd be the WiFi. ^^

A visitor from Sweden posted Sun December 30, 2012:
The "big hump" above the 2nd door is for the wireless internet conection aboard.

A visitor from - posted Sun December 30, 2012:
The hump is for the WiFi. Can't wait to see this beauty in the skies!

Cool photo. Anyone know the function of the big hump above the 2nd door?
