On April 30th 1964, this Curtiss Commando was cruising at 18000 feet from Copiapo (Chile) to Cordoba (Argentina), carrying 8 race horses from Lima (Peru) and 6 people (4 crew members). A sudden malfunction in an engine forced the crew to try an emergency landing on the half dried lake "Laguna Brava", at 4271 meters. All were rescued 2 days later, except the horses, and the plane which is in good condition but scrapped due to the difficulty and risk of repairing it there. Help with the editing from Gary W

It looks so unreal! Beautifull setting, a very original place and interesting (pre)historical background.

What an excellent picture! I love the composition - the general feeling the stripped carcass on the dry lake bed - conveys. This is one of the most artistic aircraft pictures I have seen in a long time.

I was there in Laguna Brava La Rioja last month, and access to the wreck is very hazardous. I was unable to get anywhere near it, and it looks as though there less pieces of the remains thanthose in the photograph. In 1960 I was flying across the Andes in a Super C-46 for another company. Years later (in the 70 ies) I was a Captain in the B-707 in Aerolíneas Argentinas and one of our Flight Engineers with whom I flew several times had been the mechanic on the wrecked aircraft. Souls on board
had been only four, the Captain, a first officer, a mechanic and a person in charge of the horses. The first officer´s son is a pilot in Aerolíneas Argentinas today-

Looks almost as ants and other insects have eaten up that body ...

Looks like an old discarded fish head after the rest was used for fillets. Such a place of solitude for this sad bird. Great photo!
