A Sad sight. NBS sitting next to her sistership ZK-SUJ. All the Air New Zealand logo's and Koru have been removed, along with her engines as the process of breaking her down for parts begins. There is still some talk that she will be re-engined and flown to the US for the breakdown.

Truly a sad story told here if a 747-400 can't find a new owner. Is there something wrong with this A/C? How could classic 747s find new homes and this 'baby' which can't be more than 20 years old with far fewer cycles be at the end of its life?

Something doesn't add up here. I'm sure she worth more sold off for service than sold for parts and scrap.

The day has come....the first 744 scrapping.....

Is this the first ever -400 to be scrapped because of age?

Sad sight to see.....This 744 is a 19-year-old airframe, named The Bay of Islands, which was grounded and put up for sale after completing Air New Zealand's historic biofuel test flight in December.
Its amazing to find that this aircraft is only worth book value $5 Million. Just a fraction of the US$250m list price for a new 744. History in the making again!!

Air New Zealand's first Boeing 747-400 begins its long trip to the scrapheap today, departing Auckland for the United States to be dismantled for parts.

Already stripped of its seats and furniture ZK-NBS will take off at 5.20pm on 05-06-2009, bound for Roswell, New Mexico.

Nice parting shot for NBS, at AKL on a clear day. This aircraft has left NZ now, real shame she was the very first 744 for Air NZ.

It was called MATAAUA when new and when wearing Cathay Pacific's livery in the 1990's.
