The Ahrens 404 was meant to be both a military LD3 container cargo plane and a civilian transport. It was designed for STOL capabilities, had alternate fuel use to allow it to bring supplies to small isolated area and a rear loading bicut door, which allowed loading and parachuting and was going to be built in Puerto Rico. Only two examples flew and two more were completed before the project was terminated.

Thank you for including this very rare photo of the Ahrens 404 that was designed and built in the old Ramy Air Force Base (B-52) hanger in Puerto Rico in the early 1980s. It was a fantastic airplane--3 were completed by Peter Ahrens and his sons (Edd and Kim) and I saw them flying under FAA certification when I visited the Puerto Rico plant in 1984. But for Puerto Rico politics and the influence by Spanish government/CASA people who had a competing cargo aircraft that the AR404 would have given serious competition to, the world would have a 21st century equivalent to the old DC-3/C-47 that would just run forever at very low costs and very low technical support.
