Beautiful engine. I wonder what these rods are for, connecting the cylinder heads to the propshaft as it were. Is it simply a reinforcement to keep the cylinders from flying off?

To my friend from the Netherlands, those are the tubes that house the push-rods that open the intake and exhaust valves on the cylinder heads. You find the same thing on air-cooled Volkswagens and Harley-Davidsons as well as the other round engines. You add less weight than having th push-rods run internally. The bolts you see just 'above' the tube is for the valve pivot and the little black cover is for 'lashing' the valve.
