Designed by Bjørn Andreasson when he was employed at Convair in the USA in the 1950s as the BA-7, this aircraft was originally produced in Sweden as the AB Malmö Flygindustri MFI-9. The German aircraft manufacturer Bölkow signed an agreement for license production of the design in 1961. Saab bought MFI in 1968 and the MFI-9 was further developed as the Saab MFI-15 Safari and MFI-17 Supporter. In addition, the MFI-9 was offfered as a homebuilt kit for a short time.
