How's that for a dip in the runway.. Its about a 140' difference between the end of 28 and 10. What a lovely field to get my private pilots license on a few years back..

I've done that at Falwell in a 150! It's like flying a metal hang glider!

It's so green! I love VA in the summer! Quite a dip there, but a cool view from this perspective makes it look like the 152 is floating down like a feather. Very cool!

Absolutely brilliant. I've yet to see a field with such personality and difficulty as Falwell, and you've captured the essence of it all.

WOW! This particular runway (RWY 10/28) gets my "Runway Roller-coaster Award" for the big "hill"! Great Shot!

Wow that's a really good shot. The airfield looks so nice and clean. That runway is a bit rediculous though.

I dont see how you can takeoff/land on the runway without catching the runway with your propeller or your tail! its crazy! and a very challenging runway!

An undulating runway on a hill?! Thanks for this extraordinary photo Mr. Wright.

Very interesting place, reminds me somehow of Courchevel airfield, France, but this one is slightly less challenging. (gp)

Is that serious? Couldn't they find more appropriate place to make runway in the whole state?
That's probably one of most interesting runway pics on the whole website.

Just to clarify for those who are curious about Falwell Airport. Because of the slope on the runway, its been defined for Takeoff ONLY on 10 and Landing ONLY on 28. The aircraft you see in this photo is taking off. And for the record.. when you land at this airport, you HAVE to get it down in the first 1000 feet (flat part), otherwise, its a go around cause there is a hill coming straight at you. .. And yes.. landing at this airport is a rush with that huge hill straight in front. -Adam Wright

Wow, nice photo! I think there is only one airfield in the entire world which is more challenging than this one, and that would be Lukla Airport in the shadows of Mount Everest.

5 stars for the photo, very nice and clear. In terms of the airport, would it not make sense for aircraft to land uphill and take off downhill? Or am I missing something??

GREAT PHOTO and it brings back some fond memories.
I lived in Lynchburg for 3 years working with Air Virgina. This little airport was owned by Jerry Falwell's brother. There was a story around Lynchburg of Jerry's Jet Commander being landed there due to fog over the Lynchburg Airport. Reportedly his First Officer quite after the airplane was parked so she would not have to try and fly it out.

If Harriers can benefit from a "ski jump" take off assist, why can't a Cessna?

Kelly Airpark south of Denver Colorado looks much the same but only 40 feet wide, this kinda looks easy : )

Haha wow, brings back memories. I got my private at this ariport in 01'. My most vivid flying memory is still the first flight I ever took in a small airplane at this field. Sure got me hooked on flying!

How to land?

What is that for a runway. How can they land on it. Imagin if an Airbus would land on it (I know the runway is too short but just imagin), the acoustic signal would be like this: 400...300...200...100...50...40...30...RETARD...and again 20...RETARD... Understood? Because one side of the runway is too high and the other is to low;)

I'm from Lynchburg also I remember this field very well. I know a few people who gave up on their PPL because instructors operating over at Lynchburg (KLYH, Class D) would have them fly over here. What you don't see is a LARGE power substation off the departure end in this photo. Makes for a very bad place when losing an engine on take off.

The photo gives a good impression of this special airport. I landed there 22 years ago, as a student pilot, and I still remeber it, 5000+ flights later.

A couple of you are asking how to land on this runway: I checked the A/FD, and the Airport Remarks say "Land Rwy 28 (west) tkf Rwy 10 (east). Does that answer your question?
