Looking more like a rocket, this aircraft first flew on 26th December 1956. Powered by a turbojet for takeoff it reverted to ramjet power for high speed flight. It made 140 flights to the end of 1957 achieving a speed of Mach 1.15. The pilot was seated prone in the glass portion of the nose.

Great legacy photo; we take for granted how corrageous these test pilots are; And how govertment enpowered insdustry to take technological leaps now forgoten. I had an elderly patient about a month ago; an ordinary looking old man. When asked what he did as a youngter, his eyes filled with excitement; " I was a fighter pilot during WWII", he had proof too.
