N39JR (cn 001) "Tsunami", a custom built Unlimited class racer is seen in the pits at the Reno Air Races. This aircraft was designed by Bruce Boland for air racing and despite the similarity in appearance, is not a modification of a P-51 Mustang. The aircraft was powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin and was very fast. Despite this, it only won one Unlimited Gold Race (in Sherman Texas in 1990). It was destroyed in a crash several months after this picture was taken, killing the owner, John Sandberg.
