The only picture of "Janie" (G-CBSS) on Airliner.net and the more original Yak 52 start-up shot. This Yak is now based in Belgium (Namur - EBNM) and she is flown by a Boeing 747-400 Airline Pilot.

Yep, this is the first picture on Airliner.net of this great looking Yak 52 owned by Etienne Verhellen from Belgium.
Hope to see more of her ...
The paint scheme is very nice : metallic blue with a grey nose and tail.
This aircraft is part of the "Yakkes Foundation". Visit : http://wwww.yakkes.com/

When I was working in Brussels I used to go to the friendly airfield of Namur just to catch "Janie" starting ... and doing her stuff in the air ! A joy to watch ... and the most wonderful growl of the 9 cylinders radial engine !

Starting a 9 cylinders "Radial" engine is great fun for everyone : pilot and spectators alike as this great shot clearly demonstrates ... and try to imagine the lovely growl of this flying machine ... the smell of leather and oil in the cockpit ... the G's when pulling a loop !
Yak 52 ... pleasure for all the senses ! Yeah !!

Turning the prop, priming, turning, priming, what a job, but it's worth. A short doubt and then it's alive, running on all nine cilinders, wow what a sound. This must be a plane with character and watch out, you can fall in love with her/him.

Today, Thursday 04 May 2006, this lovely shot of "Janie" became the most popular Yak 52 picture on Airliners.net with 12,500 distinct views !
Hope to see more photos of this very "classy" Yak 52 registered G-CBSS on your great website for aviation fanatics like me. If you want to see this baby for real and even fly "Russian", go to the beautiful grass airfield of Namur in Belgium where she is regularly flown by Etienne Verhellen and his friends. You will also see another Yak 52, a Yak 50, a couple of Stampes (SV-4), a Pitts S-2B, some gliders and the Pilatus going up with the Paras and down without ... ! What a great place !

You have captured one of the rare instances in aviation today: a piston engine being kicked up! A pity that there is no sound to accompany it!

Yak-52 have the most charismatic engine starting I've ever seen or heard.
Just look at this amazing photo.
But for the compressed air noise and cylinder firing when this radial engine starts, you will have to witness a real start.
Now I would love to fly in one lovely Yakovlev like this one ...

Timing is everything : hit the start button, flick the mags to 1 + 2 and as long as you have air pressure, the good old M-14P will start ! Enjoy.

Starting the engine of the Yaks (Yak-50 and 52), the Vedeneyev M-14P and M-14PF is a skill, some would even go as far as calling an art ! Clearly the pilot starting this Yak-52 has done it a few times before and was even able to warn the photographer about the exhaust smoke on starting !
Quite normal on this 9 cylinders RADIAL engine producing a wonderful growl once flying. Music to the ears of aviation enthusiasts like myself.
We love the way this aircrat is flown by Etienne,
a master Yakovlev pilot.
