I flew on a Western Airlines Constellation in August, 1970 from Anchorage to Homer, Alaska. All of the luggage was loaded into the Speedpak – it looked like a huge bathtub with small wheels that was attached to the underside of the fuselage. The unloading of it in Homer was very fast and efficient. It seemed like a terrific idea for that application and I always thought it was something purpose-built for small Alaska airports with limited ground staff. So, now I know it was used by many Connies for many decades.

Correction. My flight from Anchorage to Homer was in August, 1968. I recently learned that Western Airlines flew the final Constellation scheduled passenger flight in the U.S. on November 26, 1968 -- it was from Juneau to Anchorage.
