Lockheed demonstrated the third extended-range Tristar 200 for Gulf Air at Farnborough in 1976 – the airline had just taken on the type to replace its VC10 fleet. Gulf Air was formed in 1973 when the governments of Bahrain, Qatar, Abu Dhabi and Oman bought up BOAC’s shares in Gulf Aviation. Its TriStars were Omani-registered (although it also leased American and Canadian registered ones).
