Resting in near-spaceworthy condition at the Udvar-Hazy Center. You can't have a true appreciation of the shuttle's size until you stand right next to it. It's still a little humorous to see the astronaut suit suspended in midair while the shuttle is on the floor... Sony Alpha a700, Tamron 17-50.

Interesting that this structure was intended to be made spaceworthy as it's designator implies (OV-101) but was subsequently passed over for Challenger (OV-099) as the spaceworthy article. This ship, if made spaceworthy as planned may have averted the Challenger disaster of 1996, just because things may have worked out differently...

Good information, however the Challenger disaster was in 1986.

I have visited this museum, this shuttle has never been to space. It is similar in all elements to the space-worthy ones except the emission of the engines. It was used to test the gliding descents within the atmosphere.
