I saw this airplane take off from Santa Monica Airport, seconds later it had crashed at the Penmar Golf Course in Venice, which is a couple of hundred feet away from the runway. I spoke with a couple of people that saw it come down, they said that the airplanes engine was off since they didn't hear any noise coming from the plane. It basically nose dove while spinning and hit a tree, pilot didn't make it.

I learned to fly in this plane & took all of my aerial shots that have made front page on this very site, in this very plane ... I truly never thought I'd see the day its crashing would make front page. It's with great sadness I found out this news as I was to fly 838 this night had the man who rented it not booked it. Pilot error caused this crash according to fellow Pilots watching the "touch n gos" he was practicing. Rest in Peace to both, I truly miss this aircraft. Please view the images on this site of N94838 in better times as well. She was a strong, beautiful aircraft. Godspeed.

It's always sad when an aviator doesn't make it out alive. My thoughts with the family. RIP

What a good little plane it was. My condolences to the family and friends. We pray for the loss, and that none of us ever experience such a tragedy. RIP

I was getting ready to go up just last week when this happened, my instructor and I talked about it, but it always hits close to home when you see a fellow aviator pass on, doing what we all love. I think I speak for everyone when I say our thoughts will be with the 2 men and their families, and hopefully it will be a long time before we see something like this again. R.I.P

Sorry - not sure if I agree with light aircraft fatals on ANet - bit too personal for wider circulation and too up close for his family. A tad ghoulish for my liking. being an ex cop I have seen accident victims - not too pleasant.
