On 2nd October 1936, test pilot James G. Ray landed the AC-35 in a downtown park in Washington DC where it went on display. Later that month the aircraft was converted to drivable configuration by folding back the rotor blades over the fuselage, the propeller disengaged, the tailwheel put in gear and the front wheels used for steering. Ray then drove it through Washington to much acclaim to be handed over to the Aeronautics Branch at the main entrance of the Commerce Building.
