Painted as 'Lope's Hope' (USAF serial 43-23266), the personal charge of WWII Flying Tiger pilot and now NASM Deputy Director Don Lopez. Although displayed as a USAF P-40E, this aircraft was actually built for the Royal Canadian AF as a Kittyhawk IA, delivered 11-Mar-1941 (RCAF serial AK875). The RCAF used it to defend Alaska against Japanese attack during the war. Eventually retired (later registered NX1048N & N1048N) and now fully restored and displayed at the NASM's Udvar-Hazy Center [Nikon D3]
