I served with the united states marines and spent some air time as our unit was transported. i was always amazed that this huge seemingly unaerodynamic machine would actually fly. we would watch the significant movement of the booms supporting the tail section during air turbulance. before boarding, a member of the air crew would go through the commands, attachment and operation of the parachute we were required to wear during the flight and the exits from which we were to jump. were it necessary, it would have been a first for all of us. at night, the huge radial engines belched a steady stream of fire from the exhausts.
