| Other info: | The aviation bug bit me in 1960. As a newspaper carrier, I won a day-long trip to Disneyland in Southern California. Disneyland was not the highlight of the day. The highlights of the day were my first airplane rides. TWA was the major carrier between SFO and LAX at that time. Down in the early morning on a Super Constellation and back that evening on a new 707. I was hooked. Unbelievably, the U.S. Air Force gave me the opportunity to pilot both airplanes. I was a Co-Pilot on C/EC-121s and an Aircraft Commander (PIC) on KC-135s. In 1980, I left active duty, to sell my services to the highest bidder. However there were few bidders in the early 1980s and a huge glut of us former Viet Nam era pilots. Although the flying jobs rarely lasted long, I had a great time flying Metroliners, Dash 7s, and even a short stint in DC-8s. Unfortunately, reality set in after the Air Traffic Controllers strike with the post-deregualtion recession (Depression?). With two young kids, a mortgage and the usual assortment of bills it was time for my kid's dad to get a job. Reluctantly, I walked away. I am now semi-retired from my own business and retired from the Air Force Reserve. I am rapidly building hours aft of the flight deck door. I have inactive Airline Transport Pilot, Multi Engine, Commercial, Single Engine, B-707/720 Type Ratings and a Turbojet Flight Engineer certificate. I've been there, done that and even have a few T-shirts. I had a ball and appreciate the privileges that I have received. I respect and admire the dedication of those that stuck it out, as well as those that keep those wonderful flying machines in motion. For me, I am more than content with my memories and a nice comfortable first class seat on your proud birds. | ||
