The door for the telescope can seen in the rear fuselage. SOFIA's Science and Mission Operations Center is based here at Moffett. The aircraft is scheduled to go into service next year. Weighing nearly 20 tons, it is the world's largest airborne telescope. Science flights are scheduled to start in 2009. We are seeing the counterweight and the instrumentation section. This is a five minute exposure taken from the Causeway (about 7 miles away from the pad). Taken with a borrowed all-manual Nikomat camera, 24 mm lens, f/16, Kodak Royal Gold 100 film.
