164384 / AA-505 (cn I-724) One of only 7 aircraft left in service with Attack Sqn. 75 Sunday Punchers, Oceana, VA, this was the penultimate A-6 delivered a mere 5 years before, and it was now on its way to the boneyard! The Punchers were the first operational A-6 unit, taking it directly into Vietnam combat in 1965; by March '97, the unit was one of the last two to stand down. The Intruder was fading away... NAS Atlanta t-line. |

161662 / AA-502 (cn I-639) The tail-end of the Intruder, figuratively and literally. This was one of the last few flying with what was both the first and last (one of 2) operational A-6 sqn, VA-75 Sunday Punchers. This tail shot reveals a gallery of AirPac A-6 markings: VA-52 Knight Riders,VA-95 Green Lizards,VA-115 Arabs/Eagles,VA-128 Golden Intruders,VA-145 Swordsmen,VA-155 Silver Foxes,VA-165 Boomers,VA-185 Nighthawks,VA-196 Main Battery-- Atlantic sqns on other side? Probably the last A-6 visit to NAS Atlanta... |

151808 (cn I-111) Change was in the air that sultry afternoon on the VA-205 Green Falcons ramp; actually, it was already on the ramp with the arrival of the first Intruder (see also photo 2159091). This marked a significant upgrade in potential for the Naval Air Reserve, giving it true all-weather attack capability for the first time (though A-6s had already been in fleet service for 25 years). As may be seen in the photo of the taxying tanker, it is fresh from re-work at St. Augustine and carries no unit markings. |

149486 / ND-421 (cn I-15) It was Navy Secretary John Lehman's ambition to bring about "horizontal integration" in the reserves, and this photo records his legacy. After more than 20 years in the fleet, the all-weather Intruder began to equip the first Naval Air Reserve sqn., VA-304 Firebirds, Alameda, CA in 7-88. One of the unit's tankers is seen taxying away from the NAS Atlanta t-line for a -29 departure; it wears the initial, less colorful unit markings. |

151570 / AE-517 (cn I-52) The sun was just beginning to appear against a dark overcast when I snapped this shot of visiting A-6 tanker. It carries a transitional color scheme that includes full color insignia and low-viz markings; it was assigned to Attack Sqn. 176 Thunderbolts from NAS Oceana, VA. In the interest of increased visibility for air wing tankers, KA-6Ds soon carried hi-viz colors, markings, and unit insignia. |
