USA - Air Force
Republic P-47D Thunderbolt
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, April 16, 2014
Remark
Photographer
42-22668 "National Museum of the US Air Force" Actual 42-23278. Ex N5087V, N347D. This is an earlier -D version of the P-47 with the razorback instead of the later bubble canopy. The exhibited airframe mainly had a civil career but is shown in the colors of Col. Kearby's (highest-scoring Thunderbolt pilot in the Pacific) P-47 he flew on his last mission. Kearby was killed on March 5, 1944 after being shot down by a Japanese Ki-43. The fin of the real 42-22668 is displayed here. [Nikon D800 / AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm]

Remark
Photographer
45-49167 (cn 399-55706) "National Museum of the US Air Force" Ex N47DB. The P-47D was the most produced version of the Thunderbolt with over 12000 units built. This one features the bubble canopy which was only fitted on the later -D models and greatly improved rearward visibility for the pilots. The displayed aircraft served in the Peruvian Air Force before going back to the US in 1969 to a civilian owner. The museum acquired it in 1981. [Nikon D800 / AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm]

It is marked as P-47D serial 42-74742 code WZ-D, nicknamed Snafu/War Eagle from 84th FS / 78th FG operating from Duxford in early 1944. Sadly this P-47 was sold back to the United States in the summer of 2013.
