XR220 (cn XO-2) The TSR-2 exemplifies one of the saddest episodes in the long history of British aviation, leading to this famous quote from renowned aircraft designer Sir Sydney Camm "All modern aircraft have four dimensions: span, length, height and politics. TSR-2 simply got the first three right." This aircraft never actually flew, rather had almost been completed when the programme was cancelled. One of the absolute highlights of the wonderful RAF museum at Cosford. |

XR220 (cn XO-2) The TSR2 never developed beyond the prototype stage with only 2 examples built (XR219 and this example). The TSR2 (Tactical Strike and Reconnaissance Mach 2) was a high speed low level strike and reconnaissance aircraft developed to replace the English Electric Canberra. Initial reports indicated the TSR2 was an outstanding technical success, but the programme was cancelled on 6th April 1965. On static display inside the Test Flight hangar at the excellent RAF Museum, Cosford (Canon 50D + 10-20 EX DC HSM) |

XR219 (cn XO-1) The prototype TSR-2 first flew on 27 September 1964. It made 24 test flights with a total time of 13 hours 9 minutes, the last being on 31 March 1965. I had seen it take off on 8 March leaving a vivid trail of shock diamonds in its wake. This was the only public viewing of the aircraft which left by road for destructive tests at Shoeburyness soon afterwards. |
