Boeing 747SR-46(SCA)
Houston - Ellington Field (AFB) (EFD)
USA - Texas, October 24, 2010
Remark
Photographer
N911NA (cn 20781/221) The front nose section of the shuttle carrier aircraft #2. She is work horse hence there are very little creature comforts remaining from her days as a JAL aircraft. Here you see some of the few seats and wall panels on board. The wallpaper is still JAL like the seats and carpet. The rest of the aircraft is stripped to the bare frame to conserve weight. The boxes are supplies that were hastly moved to allow the public troop through the main cabin as she sat on the ground.

USA - Texas, October 24, 2010
Remark
Photographer
N911NA (cn 20781/221) The top cabin space on the SCA is very sparsely decorated. The wallpaper is still JAL from the 80s. The aircraft is stripped to save weight. It was purchased from JAL and transformed by Boeing to this very unique role. Initially, NASA only had one such aircraft but post Challenger the recommendation was made to acquire a second back up aircraft. At the end of the program, this aircraft is planned to be cannibalized for spare parts to keep the NASA SOFIA 747SP and N905NA (the ex AA SCA) flying.

N911NA (cn 20781/221) These wheels have carried the Space Shuttle. NASA uses two modified Boeing 747 jetliners, originally manufactured for commercial use, as Space Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA). One is a 747-100 model, while the other is designated a 747-100SR (short range). The two aircraft are identical in appearance and in their performance as Shuttle Carrier Aircraft. The second SCA is designated NASA 911. It was obtained by NASA from Japan Airlines (JAL) in 1989. It was also modified by Boeing Corporation. It was delivered to NASA on Nov. 20, 1990.
