59-0082 (cn 8-24-118) Displaying additional fuselage markings that may indicate assignment to the squadron commander, F-106A 90082 is from the 49th Fighter Interceptor Squadron at Griffiss AFB, New York. Typical of those units that operated the 'six’, the exterior finish was nothing less than immaculate, despite the aircraft being more than 20 years old. |

57-0234 This 49th Fighter Interceptor Sqn. Six gets a tow after an emergency landing. The occasion was the stand-down ceremony for the unit (the last regular USAF Dart unit) in which this aircraft participated in the last four-ship flyby when the emergency brought about its return (hydraulic system problem, as I recall). The pilot appeared visibly frustrated (here and in the alert barn shot of the same plane, #2105996), though he was on his way again (to D-M) within the hour! |

57-0234 An overview of the 49th FIS alert "barns" prior to the inactivation ceremony. The four nearest shelters are clearly occupied, while- I believe- at least some or all of the other four also contain aircraft. Four of these flew over for the ceremony (1 returning, of course), continuing to D-M for storage, while others flew out subsequently. On my previous visit in 1986 (when the unit was fully active), I was warned not to even approach within 100' of the fence that is now open because of alert security. |

In times past, the fin badge would have been that of Air Defense Command, but by 1980, this organisation was history, with former assets now assigned to Tactical Air Command, whose badge is carried on the tail. |

57-0234 This photo would have been impossible for me to take only days before this, but here we see the pilot of this Dart exiting while ground crewmen get busy in the confines of a 49th Fighter Interceptor Sqn. alert barn. The subject of the photo experienced a system malfunction after participating in a final four-ship fly-by. The nose insignia is that of First Air Force (commanding air defense units) and the occasion was the inactivation of the 49th- which made this photo possible!! |
