G-BOPO (cn 021) It was a real treat to see an Optica in the air again. The Optica first flew in 1979 with the unusual ducted fan pusher propellor. It has excellent low speed characteristics and superb all round visibility making it a cheaper alternative to helicopters for surveillance operations such as Police work. It is hoped that these may soon re-enter production

G-BMPF (cn 010) This was a strange aircraft type with a ducted fan pusher propellor. It was capable of very low speed flight and thus making it a considerably cheaper option to helicopters for surveillance work. This example was used by the Police in Northern Ireland

G-BMPN (cn 018) An Edgley Optica 'Observation Aircraft' on static display at the Bi-Centennial Airshow. Note the unusual tail-boom mounted empennage of this 'Ducted Fan' aircraft. This aircraft attracted a lot of interested spectators, but buyers were very scarce. The Optica has a generic 'Police' paint scheme, using blue/white checkers on the tail.

Quite a view out! (And in as well - too bad about all the show-related clutter.) Certainly a distinctive shape and one of the few applications of a ducted fan on a manned aircraft.
