Grumman F-14A Tomcat
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, December 13, 1991
Remark
Photographer
158620 / AF-211 (cn 21) Super 211, a reconditioned Block 65 Tomcat, poses on the NAS Atlanta t-line a short while before departing on the CVWR-20 practice Alpha Strike. One of 3 participating VF-202 Superheat (NAS Dallas, TX) F-14s, it carries the standard colors and markings of the TPS color scheme. The 5 Hunter and Superheat Tomcats were launched next (for Target CAP) after the E-2C, which was first to go. The strike aircraft followed about 30 min. later.

Remark
Photographer
162711 / AF-201 (cn 557) Fighting 202 Superheats was well represented in the Carrier Air Wing (Reserve)- 20 practice Alpha Strike; here is a line-up of 3 of them headed by this glossy Block 140. A brand new airplane when delivered to VF-202 c.1987, Super 201 was the sqn. COs bird, and was notable for being the last production F-14A. The Gloss Gull Gray fuselage panel awkwardly interrupts the US national insignia on the forward fuselage.

Remark
Photographer
162709 / AF-100 (cn 555) Friday the 13th, 1991 was memorable for me because that was when Carrier Air Wing (Reserve)-20 executed a practice Alpha (or Alfa, according to the Navy) Strike. Several aircraft met at NAS Atlanta from other locations, including 5 Tomcats. This is the CAG bird for VF-201 Hunters, a sharp Block 140 delivered new to the unit. It bears a 75th Anniv. of U.S. Naval Air Reserve sticker on the tail.

Remark
Photographer
162708 / AF-101 (cn 554) Another Tomcat participant for the CVWR-20 practice Alpha Strike was the Skipper's plane of VF-201 Hunters from NAS Dallas, TX. Besides the 5 F-14s, there were 4 F/A-18s, 4 A-6s (based VA-205), a Prowler, and an E-2C.

Grumman F-14A Tomcat
Orlando - Sanford International (Central Florida Regional) (SFB / KSFB)
USA - Florida, April 1978
Remark
Photographer
159601 / AB-200 (cn 148) The move toward low-viz color schemes for US Navy fighters is underway, as demonstrated by this VF-32 Swordsmen (NAS Oceana) Tomcat. The original Gull Gray and Insignia White scheme has been modified, with much of the white overpainted under the nose and on the stabilators, and the tails re-painted gray (originally white) and no more broad yellow bands. Later transferred to VF-142 and crashed on carrier approach in 1980. 1978 Sanford air show.

Grumman F-14A Tomcat
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, September 15, 1989
Remark
Photographer
158617 / AF-110 (cn 18) A number of the Tomcats first assigned to Fighting 201 Hunters, NAS Dallas, TX, were older test aircraft that were reconditioned to Block 135 (late-A model) standard. This was one of the oldest- a Block 60, seen on a partly cloudy morning on the NAS Atlanta main ramp. The tail carries what became standard unit markings.

USA - Navy
Grumman F-14A Tomcat (G-303)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, November 3, 1989
Remark
Photographer
158626 / AF-103 (cn 27) On the same day as the VF-201 Tomcat made its final check flight before departing NAS Atlanta after several months under repair (see photo 2002400), this squadron mate was seen on the transit line (probably transported the check pilot for Hunter 101). This is one of the reconditioned test aircraft (a Block 65) and it bears another variation on the tail insignia which was uncommon and short-lived.

Grumman F-14A Tomcat
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, June 25, 1989
Remark
Photographer
161619 / NK-210 (cn 478) That warm Sunday morning was the only time I was able to photograph Tomcats from sister squadrons VF-21 and 154 (both then assigned to CVW-14). Fighting 21 Freelancers were firm adherents to hi-viz schemes for a while, and this is a good example. I believe photographer C.J. "Heater" Heatley III (book, The Cutting Edge) was commander of the squadron then.

Remark
Photographer
160682 / NK-110 (cn 301) Parked just a short distance away from another Tomcat from sister squadron VF-21 was this one from Fighting 154 Black Knights, seen on the NAS Atlanta main ramp. Unlike the Freelancers, the 'Knights more readily embraced the TPS scheme, as evidenced by this aircraft. A based VR-46 C-9 and Hangar 1 appear in the background. Both units were home-based at NAS Miramar, CA.

USA - Georgia, October 13, 1989
Remark
Photographer
162708 / AF-101 (cn 554) This image of a fresh appearing Tomcat belies the story behind its presence on the main line at NAS Atlanta. An incident occurred to this aircraft when departing an air show, and it landed here, where it underwent extensive repairs for several months (see photo 2002400 for story). On this date, it was out on the line for engine calibration (note the red engine intake screen); it was another 2 weeks or so before it finally departed. Sqn. COs bird, VF-201 Hunters, NAS Dallas, TX.

Grumman F-14A Tomcat
Warner Robins - Robins AFB (WRB / KWRB)
USA - Georgia, October 1984
Remark
Photographer
161163 / AC-112 (cn 390) Fighter Sqn. 11 at NAS Oceana, VA, provided this Tomcat as a static display for the 1984 Robins AFB air show. It is finished in a transitional (on the way to the Tactical Paint Scheme) scheme of overall Gloss Gull Gray with dark gray or black markings and full color squadron markings and trim. VF-11 Red Rippers is one of the oldest continually serving fighter units in the Navy, and the tail insignia goes back to the beginning in 1927 (the boar's head was based on the Gordon's gin label!!).

Remark
Photographer
161297 / NM-200 (cn 423) One Sunday afternoon, a Tomcat over Chattanooga, TN declared an emergency and was routed to NAS Atlanta. It resided there for the next 3 days while its hydraulic system was repaired, supplying me with my only chance to photograph anything from short-lived (10-86 to 4-88) CVW-10. In Hangar 1, this is the CAG bird for VF-194 Red Lightnings, full color on Gloss Gull Gray.
