151808 (cn I-111) Change was in the air that sultry afternoon on the VA-205 Green Falcons ramp; actually, it was already on the ramp with the arrival of the first Intruder (see also photo 2159091). This marked a significant upgrade in potential for the Naval Air Reserve, giving it true all-weather attack capability for the first time (though A-6s had already been in fleet service for 25 years). As may be seen in the photo of the taxying tanker, it is fresh from re-work at St. Augustine and carries no unit markings. |

149486 / ND-421 (cn I-15) It was Navy Secretary John Lehman's ambition to bring about "horizontal integration" in the reserves, and this photo records his legacy. After more than 20 years in the fleet, the all-weather Intruder began to equip the first Naval Air Reserve sqn., VA-304 Firebirds, Alameda, CA in 7-88. One of the unit's tankers is seen taxying away from the NAS Atlanta t-line for a -29 departure; it wears the initial, less colorful unit markings. |

151570 / AE-517 (cn I-52) The sun was just beginning to appear against a dark overcast when I snapped this shot of visiting A-6 tanker. It carries a transitional color scheme that includes full color insignia and low-viz markings; it was assigned to Attack Sqn. 176 Thunderbolts from NAS Oceana, VA. In the interest of increased visibility for air wing tankers, KA-6Ds soon carried hi-viz colors, markings, and unit insignia. |

152624 / AF-521 (cn I-172) A break in the low clouds produces dramatic lighting on the VA-205 Green Falcons line for this nearly flawless Intruder tanker. A recent arrival, this was probably its first venture outside after finishing touch detailing (sqn. markings) in the paint shop; it underwent extensive rework at the Grumman St. Augustine (FL) plant before its delivery flight to NAS Atlanta. |

151808 (cn I-111) The VA-205 maintenance man on the left holds his right hand up in a fist to signal to the Intruder pilot to stay on the brakes. So arrives the first A-6 (a tanker) for the Green Falcons, direct from a thorough rework at the Grumman St. Augustine, FL plant. The aircraft was made to hold its position under power while other members of the maintenance crew look over the brakes for overheating and other external checks. |

149937 / ND-21 (cn I-18) Amid the crowd of home-based VA-205 Green Falcons A-6E's and KA-6D's is this visiting tanker from sister squadron Attack 304 Firebirds all the way from NAS Alameda, CA. The first Navy Reserve unit to transition to Intruders (1988) from the A-7E Corsair II, the Firebirds stood down the same time the Green Falcons did in 1994; the rest of the Intruder community was gone by mid-1997. Hi-viz color schemes were deemed essential for tankers so colorful Navy planes lingered into the 1990's. |

149940 / AF-523 (cn I-21) Salty Dog (Green Falcons call sign) 523 rests on the busy VA-205 line on a hot summer afternoon. The last tanker received by the squadron, it looks a bit weathered as compared to the images of the newly delivered tankers in 1990. In less than a year, all the tankers would have left the unit; a year after that (August 1994), the last A-6 departed and the Falcons stood down shortly afterward. |

152919 / AF-522 (cn I-223) Another of the recently arrived tankers for the Green Falcons of VA-205, this one, like all KA-6's, displays the old gloss gull gray and insignia white scheme as a holdover in the dull world of Tactical Paint Scheme gray because it was soon realized that visibility was a desirable thing when pilots of thirsty fighters and bombers were looking for the nearest "gas station" (common call-sign for Navy tankers: Texaco!). |

152624 / AF-521 (cn I-172) A beautiful October afternoon and a quiet time on the Attack Sqn. 205 line provide optimum conditions for recording this freshly painted Intruder tanker. This was the second of an eventual 4 KA-6's for the unit, all coming from the Grumman facility at St. Augustine (the first, 151808, arrived the previous August). The initial actual bomber A-6E would not arrive for another couple of months; to begin with, it was a tanker only operation. |
