XV2** There was a review of the Royal Air Force to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1977 and this Maritime Formation was a part of a magnificent fly past. The formation consisted of Nimrods MR1 XV235, XV243, XV253, XV256 and XV262, Phantoms FG1 XV583/G and XT873/S and Buccaneers S2B XT288 and XV168. A wonderful sight! |

XV230 (cn 8005) The deserted airfield at North Witham in Lincolnshire photographed from Nimrod MR1 XV230. Built in 1944 and allocated to USAAF IX Troop Carrier Command HQ, it was abandoned in 1956 and incorporated into Twyford Wood by its owners, the Forestry Commission, its life as an airfield was short. Now the most notable things flying from here are two rare species of insect, the Dingy and Grizzled skipper butterflies. My thanks to Neil and Julia Smith of Custom Fencing Crowland, for the detailed history of this airfield. |
