60-6937 (cn 131) The A-12 was the predecessor of the SR-71 and was in service from 1962 - 68. It was then put in storage in Palmdale, CA until 2000, when it was brought here for display. Only 13 of these were built, and only 8 remain on display across the country. The A-12 was capable of reaching speeds of mach 3.2 and was the world's fastest aircraft. |

60-6938 (cn 132) The main gear of this A-12 spyplane. I was informed the tires are a mix of rubber and aluminium so they are able to withstand the enormous heat involved in flying this aircraft at high speeds. It's preserved beautifully in the nice airplane pavillion at battleship park which was heavily damaged during hurricaine Katrina in 2005. They managed to restore the damaged aircraft quickly but they need your visits! |
