154595 / LK-2 One more incarnation of either 153450 or 154577 at the back of the P-3 hangar at NAS Keflavik. The usual things that identify this type of the Orion stand out very well in this photo, particularly the two sonobuoy chutes right below the national insignia. Also the box underneath the red stripe where the wing fairing joins the fuselage. This box disappeared in 1981 or 1982 replaced by a small bulge. At this time one can't really see any signs of overpainting of the numbers, as can easily be seen on some of the other pictures of these aircraft. |

153419 / LE-9 (cn 185-5216) At this time, the VPU-1 special Orions were starting to appear in full squadron markings. Here a lot of effort has been spent on getting the VP-11 Pegasus squadron markings on the tail, but one can easily see the overpainting behind the last two of the BuNo and the nose number 9. |

152724 / LJ-3 One more special finish by (E)P-3B 153450 or 154577. In this case the people that took care of the painting were rather unlucky because the real 152724, LJ-4 chrashed in the Azores on 26. April 1978. The usual arrangement of tubes can be seen under the rear fuselelage and the outline to the reoundel might indentify this one as 153450, but of course it is not certain. The configuration of the special equipment in these aircraft was code named "Iron Clad". |

152732 / LK-1 This is the second (E)P-3B that I saw at Keflavik. It has the same outline to the insignia as some of the others, that might signify 153450. It is easy to see that the last four digits of the BuNo on the fin have been repainted, as the background grey is lighter than the surrounding grey. |

153468 / LE-7 Again the people organizing the false numbers on these "Iron Clad" equpped Orions made a mistake, as 153468 was really a two seat Douglas TA-4F Skyhawk. The last BuNo in the 153xxx series for the P-3 was 153458! |

153450 / LK-10 Another spooky Orion, though this may be the only time one of these appeared with its correct BuNo on the fin, as one of the VPU-1 specials was 153450 and the other one 154577. It is also the first I saw carrying full squadron markings with tail insigina like all the P-3 squadrons were using at the time. Here you can see the usual special equipment like on 153438, but further it has a specially painted white outline to the star and bar. This is probably to make it look more like a new P-3C. This outline is however painted in a style used on no new Orions, whith a step down just behind the insignia. This step was seen later on a few of the sightings of the special Orions, which probably means that they really were 153450. |

154579 / LK-8 This common looking Orion with VP-26 codes is not at all what it seems. Number one there are visible modifications that tell it apart from other P-3Bs. Number one is the nose camera port like on the P-3C in the background. 2. the straight sided window behind the pilots station. 3. The flat optical quality plate in the forward left obsrevers position, 4. The the small pod just aft of the wing under the fuselage. 5. The two antennas just behind that pod. 6. Two sonobuoy ejection tubes. 154579 is not its correct BuNo, but either 153450 or 154577. It belongs to a special unit later designed as VPU-1 and had very sophisticated detection equipment. These aircraft were often seen at Keflavik after 1977 mostly when the Soviet Navy was nearby. |

153438 / LE-8 This special Orion is parked behind the big Orion Hangar to hide it from the civilian passanger terminal on the other side. The visible differences on this side from common B-model P-3s are the two ejection tubes visible on the fuselage bottom just below the national insignia and the P-3C type nose camera never fittet to other B-models. The correct serial for this aircraft is either 153450 or 154577. |

152725 / LR-6 (cn 185-5165) One of the first squadrons to get the P-3B model was VP-24, Batmen, shown here on the ramp at Keflavik in 1968. It arrived at MASDC on Sep 9, 1993 after finishing its USN service. |
