NX211 (cn 2) The only flying replica of the Spirit of St. Louis lands at Smith Field. The EAA brought the aircraft in to display it during the fly-in this weekend. After looking through the cockpit with it's wicker seat and primitive instruments, it's amazing to think that Charles Lindbergh sat in there for some 36 hours, and navigated over water at night using only a magnetic compass. With 835 gallons of fuel on board, he had no forward visibility at all. First pic of this aircraft on a.net. Olympus C-4040Z |

NX211 (cn 2) The only flying replica of the Spirit of St. Louis taxies for departure. The pilots who flew this aircraft said that it is very unstable, and requires constant control input to keep it straight and level. This is probably what kept Charles Lindbergh awake during his 36 hour flight! Olympus C-4040Z |

ES-XCL / N-X-211 This was to be the last flight of Ryan NYP Replica ES-XCL. Soon after departure, the wing folded upwards and the aircraft broke into pieces, 1,000 feet above the end of the runway. This aircraft was a replica in which Charles Lindbergh made his first solo transatlantic crossing from New York to Paris on the 20th/21st May 1927. The Ryan monoplane was named 'Spirit of St Louis' and was to be the star of the air show. The pilot was killed. Our thoughts go to his family. |
