MM61187 / 89-ZR S.M. 82 Canguru 1938-1960 during the World War II was used as Italian bomber and transport. After the armistice (Sept. 1943) the Germans captured 200 SM.82s, many being operated as transports by the Luftwaffe as `Savoia Gruppen`.These aircraft had better capabilities as transports than the Ju-52.

Italy - Air Force
Savoia-Marchetti SM-82PW Canguru
Vigna di Valle - Seaplane (LIRB) (closed)
Italy, December 11, 2005
Remark
Photographer
MM61850 / 14 The amazing SM.82 'Canguru' ('Kangaroo') first operated in 1939 and served until retirement in 1960. The aircraft was aptly named - she was designed to carry broken fighters in her hold. Around 850 were built during the war and used extensively for transport between Germany and East Africa. Later used as a heavy bomber. Actually MM61187, this example is painted with the 'Sovereign Order of Malta' markings. These were applied to avoid the aircraft's destruction as part of the armistice treaty.
