Sri Lanka - Air Force
Shenyang FT-5
Colombo - Ratmalana (RML / VCCC)
Sri Lanka, August 3, 2010
Remark
Photographer
SFT-1301 In 1979 the SLAF lost its jet status when the last of the jets were retired. With a commercial operation supporting tourism and ferrying VIPs, the SLAF had become a ceremonial force. However, India's geopolitics meant that the SLAF had to start fighting an internationally financed terrorist group who got increasingly sophisticated. The FT-5 were bought to start the transition to jets. From this humble start, the 2010 SLAF is one of the most experienced and combat capable small jet airforces in the world.

Remark
Photographer
SFT-1302 (ex CTF-702). After retirement of the MiG-17F and BAC Jet Provosts, the SLAF did not operate jets for about 20 years. These Chinese export copies of the 2-seat trainer version of the MiG-17 (Chengdu JJ-5) were brought to restart jets service. Received in 1990, they were used for jet conversion prior to arrival of the Hongdu K-8 Karakorum in 2001. Stored in flying state at the SLAF Aircraft Preservation and Storage Unit since 2009. Note new roundel and tail number system introduced by the SLAF recently.

SFT-1301 (ex CTF-701) Chinese built export version of the 2-seat trainer version of the MiG-17 (Chengdu JJ-5) in Sri Lankan service. Received in 1990, she was used for jet conversion prior to arrival of the Hongdu K-8 Karakorum in 2001. Stored in flying state at the SLAF Aircraft Preservation and Storage Unit since 2009. The large safety lettering for the fuselage gun was done after an accidental ground firing led to injuries to airmen. Note the new roundel and tail number system introduced by the SLAF recently.
