XZ574 (cn WA842) A veteran of the 1982 Falklands conflict, XZ574 served aboard HMS Invincible. On the 23rd April 1982 during the passage south from Ascension Island, this aircraft, piloted by HRH Prince Andrew, was sent to the aid of a Sea King from HMS Hermes that had ditched in the sea. Flt Lieutenant R Grundy, the pilot of the ditched aircraft, was rescued but the aircrew man was not found. It was also used to rescue the crew of a downed Harrier in June of that year (Canon 50D + Sigma 10-20 EX DG HSM) |

Later to 814 Sqn, code N-266 , w/o 10.9.91 in Atlantic, 34.5 miles NW of Esha Ness, Scotland, whilst op from HMS Invincible in Exercise North Star. Oil loss caused main gearbox to fail, & after ditching, capsized and sank. 4 crew all rescued. Wreck recovered, given maintenance serial number A2621, dumped at Predannack FAAF Nov 1999. Still there Sep 2007. |
