N16-118 / 07 (cn WA793) In tribute to 817 sqn RAN FAA, which decommissions Dec 2011, 35 years on S61. 5 Kings on base leg to R21 NAS for the last time as “Shark Black” (Shark 07 leads Sharks 05, 10, 22 and 21). I first saw an 817 sqn King, 32 years ago - resplendent in sqn markings and Navy colours on the flight deck of the carrier HMAS Melbourne; now, sadly devoid of all sqn insignia (much less farewell livery), they will be replaced by the MRH of 808 sqn (in Army colours!) on the LHDs. Until the next time 817 - Aude Facere! |

N16-100 / 02 (cn WA788) Nowra Air Show. Flying the Royal Australian Navy ensign. Belonging to 817 Sdn. On 2 April 2005 it fatally crashed on Nias Island, Indonesia, during relief operations following the Tsunami and a subsequent earthquake. Killed were 9 Australian Defence Force personell and 2 injured. Flat-bed scan of negative film. |

N16-114 (cn WA791) After leaving Avalon International Air Show in Victoria, I planned to travel to Canberra, ACT. After a overnight stop at Wangeratta, I thought I'd see what was about Albury Airport. To my surprise a fleet of Royal Australian Navy helicopters arrived for re-fuelling and a lunch stop. There were 3 Squirrels, 2 Seahawks, an old Iroquois and two Sea King Helicopters, one of which was N16-114 the image here where she was taxing off for departure. |

N16-100 / 02 (cn WA788) RAN Sea King Mk50a N16-100 (Cn WA788) on static display in 1985. I flew in this aircraft from Nowra (YSNW) to Canberra (YSCB) on 14Jul1977. Sadly, this RAN 817 SQN Sea King, Callsign: Shark 02, crashed on Nias Island Indonesia on 02Apr05. The crash claimed the lives of 9 ADF personnel, but fortunately two passengers survived. Condolences are extended to the families. Photo shows rear view of Sea King 'Shark 02' at a Schofields Airshow at NAS Nirimba in November 1985. |
