ZK-PBY / NZ4017 (cn CV-357) Whittakers Wing Over Wairarapa 2005 airshow. The Catalina's "Dumbos" information - thanks to Roger Leadbeater. The Catalina is painted in the paint scheme of NZ4017 the Catalina Flying boat flown by the Squadron leader of 6 Squadron based in the Solomon Islands. Amongst it's duties it flew "Dumbo" missions looking for missing airmen whose aircraft were downed in the Pacific ocean. The five "Dumbos" painted on the nose represent the five USA airmen rescued (by the crew of XXT) from a life raft after their aircraft ditched. |
