Rockwell Space Shuttle
Off-Airport - Kennedy Space Center
USA - Florida, June 30, 2006
Remark
Photographer
OV-103 (cn OV-103) Many photographers flocked in front of the Launch Pad 39B to watch the service structure rolled away from Discovery at 6:00 pm on June 30, 2006. Despite the fact that the Discovery was not illuminated by the cocktail lights while we were allowed to be there, it was truly a breathtaking moment. As the initial launch attempt in the following day had been scrubbed because of the weather, it finally had hurtled into orbit on July 4 -- the first Fourth of July Launch attempt in NASA's history.

N5008F (cn S60A-3281) What a view! This air-to-ground overview depicts the launch sites of the International Balloon Fiesta. As this was the last day/event of the fiesta called 'Mass Ascension,' due to the shower passed through the area at the break of dawn, most of special shape balloons have canceled the flight. Still, as you can see, many balloons are now preparing for launch. This photograph was taken from "That a way" flown by David Bobel (N4508B) who took me to the air for the first time. I shall never forget this moment

N905NA (cn 20107/86) Beauty and the beast. Discovery sit above the 747 after arriving at KSC. In all fairness, a voyage spanning 5.8 million miles and 219 complete orbits since blastoff July 26 from pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center can be a little bit harsh on ones looks and the smooth skin of the 747 is quite a contrast!

Remark
Photographer
OV-103 (cn OV-103) 10:39:10 AM. STS-114 "Return to Flight" Mission begins the Roll Maneuver. Note the increadibly long flame from the Solid Rocket Boosters which provide 71.4% of the power ( 3,300,000 pounds thrust each). The vehicle begins a combined roll, pitch and yaw maneuver that positions the orbiter head down, with wings level and aligned with the launch pad. The orbiter flies upside down during the ascent phase. This orientation, together with trajectory shaping, establishes a trim angle of attack favorable for aerodynamic loads and crew ground reference.

OV-103 (cn OV-103) The day before launch, I chatted with the guy in the Snack Mobile. "I saw the Columbia's lift-off from here; but, they've never come back. Shuttle does have to come back because we are always waiting for them to cheer," he said. I was moved. Yes, those who have someone waiting for you with cherished love are beautiful. People who have the place to come back are wonderful. In the America's Spaceport, the truck represents my feeling toward the seven bravest astronauts. Go Discovery! We are behind you!!

OV-103 (cn OV-103) Launch Complex 39B in all her glory with "Discovery" sitting on the night before her launch. This is the last time an orbiter will launch from here. NASA deactivated LC-39B on January 1, 2007, thus making the night time launch of STS-116, which occurred on December 9, 2006 the last regularly scheduled mission. The "stack" is sitting on a mobile launch platform (MLP). To get an idea of the size of the complex structure look for the workers on it.
