1018 The trainer variant of the famous Model 11 'Ohka' (Cherry Blossom) suicide rocket bomb. Easily distinguished by the landing skid and flaps - obviously the operational version was not configured for landings. Both versions were carried under the wing of a G4M 'Betty' bomber and released when about 50mi from their target. In combat, with rocket thrust, the Ohka could achieve dive speeds up to 615mph. The unpowered trainer carried water ballast which it would expel as it dived, then landed at 130mph! |

N601US (cn 19778/27) A rather uncommon look at Northwest's first 747. The cockpit section has been removed and is now located at The Smithsonian Museum. 7 months after this photo was taken, the rest of the fuselage was dismantled for scrap metal. |
